RTI INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES SECOND QUARTER RESULTS

Niles, Ohio — RTI International Metals, Inc., (NYSE: RTI) released results today for the second quarter 1999.

Net income for the quarter was $0.2 million, or $0.01 per share, on sales of $59 million. The results for the comparable 1998 period, excluding non-recurring income tax benefits, were a net income of $14.4 million, or $0.70 per share, on sales of $96 million. Adjustments to deferred tax assets added $16.1 million or $0.78 per share to 1998’s results for a net income of $30.4 million and $1.48 per share, respectively.

Mill product shipments for the quarter at the Company’s RMI Titanium Company subsidiary totaled 2.1 million pounds at an average price of $16.18 per pound. Shipments and financial results for the quarter were negatively impacted by the effects of a twenty-eight week strike at RMI and continuing softness in the Company’s primary markets. The strike by the United Steelworkers Union at RMI’s Niles, Ohio plant ended in April. Reduced future build rates, as well as excess inventories in the commercial aircraft industry supply chain, have reduced demand for certain titanium mill products.

Commenting on the quarter, Robert M. Hernandez, Chairman, noted, "Striking workers began returning to the job on April 19th. Our first priorities were training and requalification of workers and needed maintenance to the facility. So, while operating expenses increased, we did not return to significant production levels until early May. As a consequence, shipments in the second quarter were lower than the prior two quarters when we were on strike. Our people worked very hard in May and June to remain profitable this quarter. Operations are returning to normal now, but conditions in our aerospace markets will challenge us for the balance of 1999."

RTI International Metals, Inc., headquartered in Niles, Ohio, through its various subsidiaries, manufactures and distributes titanium and specialty metal mill products, and extruded shapes, as well as engineered systems for energy-related markets. The Company’s products are used for aerospace, industrial and consumer applications.
